There is very little wealth in Ethiopia. The central plateau is historically the richest region. Average incomes fell by 8.5% in 1991, while prices rose by 25%. Corruption among public employees is rising again, due to pressures on incomes. Ethiopian culture places more value on maintaining traditional social structures than on individual ambition.
